Vertical
antennas and vertical phased arrays on 160, 80, and 40 meters are quite common
and can be very effective with proper ground planes. Every vertical requires
good ground plane radials to keep the angle of radiation low and effective.
Consequently, radio hobbyists with the most effective vertical low band
antennas use lots of ground radials. Experience has shown that dramatic
vertical antenna performance improvements are made by adding up to 120 radial
ground wires, spoke-like from the vertical. Radial ground wires placed under a
sloper can improve its performance as well. Sold in a 1000ft spool to create a
